Sunday, November 3, 2013, St Jude's Sunday worship times return to our usual format of an 8:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. service. 8:00 a.m. is Rite I and the 10:30 a.m. service is Rite II.

And don't forget, fall back! Daylight Savings time ends Sunday morning at 2:00 a.m.

Lots on the calendar for St Jude's so we want to touch base here on the blog, too:

Friday, August 30th at 11:00 a.m., we will celebrate the life of Buzz Ayers' father, Arnold Ayers.

Sunday, September 1st after the single service, we will have a potluck luncheon to welcome Fr. John and Amanda Roberts; there will also be a money-tree for the benefit of Baby Roberts.

Temple Beth Emet will celebrate the High Holy Days at St Jude's again this year. Service dates and times for 2013 are:
Rosh Hashanah: September 4th at 8 p.m. and September 5th at 10 a.m.
Yom Kippur: September 13th at 8 p.m. and September 14th at 10 a.m.

St Jude's will host Family Promise the week of September 22-29, ably assisted by Temple Beth Emet.

Ancient Paths II is scheduled for November 1st & 2nd (two days only); please contact the office for details: 818-842-7461.

S I N G L E service S U M M E R hours

For July and August (and maybe September, too) we will be enjoying a single 9:30 a.m. service on Sunday mornings. This will save us a lot in air conditioning costs and gives us the pleasure of connecting with folks who usually go to the "other" service, whichever service that happens to be!

So come join us, just come early... or late, as the case may be!!

Bible study will also start an hour earlier: 8:30a in the Glover Room.

HEALING the LAND - Dr. Suuqiina

Please join us on June 19, for Dr. Suuqiina teaching in the St Jude's Parish Hall; the topic will be "Healing the Land."

On the related topic of caring for and healing our bodies, St. Jude's will host another Life Line Screening on June 27. Please call the Parish Office to sign up for the Parish discount.

Empty Bowl Fundraiser for Family Promise

Coming up on June 2, Empty Bowl is a neat fundraiser for Family Promise that quite a few St Judeans have enjoyed over the past few years. This year it takes place in Glendale between 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. Follow the link for all the details and explanation.

Dr Suuqiina and the Days of Remembrance in April

Dr. Suuqiina will be teaching at St Jude's in the sanctuary on Wednesday, April 17 at 7:30 p.m. If you've heard Dr. Suuqiina teach on Hebrew idioms and the Names of God before, you know this will be well-worth attending. If you haven't, then hurry up and join us for this one!!

And on April 23 at 7:45 p.m., we will have the Days of Remembrance event for the city of Burbank, commemorating the Holocaust. This year Temple Beth Emet will be hosting (600 N. Buena Vista St, Burbank, CA 91505).

God's Good Humor

Allow me to wax philosophical for a moment: how could we have a sense of humor if God didn't have one first? Consider the locomotion of a kangaroo or the face of a warthog or the fact that a giraffe's neck has the same number of vertebrae as yours or mine...

With that in mind, Saturday evening, April 6, St Jude's is hosting God's Good Humor at 7:00 p.m., featuring the comedy stylings of Rabbi Mark Sobel, Shaun Davy, Buzz Ayers and others, with Jean Darnall as Master of Ceremonies. You should come and enjoy some good clean fun. Please call the church office if you have questions.

Holy Week Services

PALM SUNDAY, March 24th - a single service at 10:00 a.m. We start in the courtyard and process into the church with palms.

MAUNDY THURSDAY, March 28th - 7:00 p.m. service concludes with the stripping of the altar and the start of the Garden Vigil.

GOOD FRIDAY, March 29th - Stations of the Cross at noon; Mass of the Presanctified at 7:00 p.m.

HOLY SATURDY, March 30th - The Great Easter Vigil mass at 7:00 p.m.

EASTER SUNDAY, March 31st - Two services at 8:00 a.m. and 10:15 a.m.

The Lenten Soup Supper Teachings have finished and, as long as we're talking schedules and calendars, do save Saturday evening, April 6, for God's Good Humor at 7:00 p.m., featuring the comedy stylings of Rabbi Mark Sobel, Shaun Davy, Buzz Ayers and others, with Jean Darnall as Master of Ceremonies. Lenten Study on Wednesday & Thursday, 7pm

Our Lenten Soup Supper & Study continues this week on both Wednesday and Thursday evening at 7 p.m. (same teaching both nights). In addition to Louie Giglio's Indescribable videos, Father Chuck brought a book by Wayne Jacobsen, In My Father's Vineyard, and suggests we get copies. It's out of print so we can't really consolidate a single order but there are quite a few inexpensive used copies available.

Do come join us for yummy soup and inspiring teaching, either Wednesday or Thursday evening (or both, if you want to experience the teaching twice). 7 pm in the Parish Hall.

Ash Wednesday and Lenten Study

Ash Wednesday is February 13th (just in time for a not-so-chocolatey-good Valentine's Day?!) and we will have a single Ash Wednesday service at 7:30.

The following Wednesday we will start our Lenten Study and Soup Suppers, running for five weeks. THIS year we are having the same program on both Wednesday and Thursday evenings at 7:00 p.m., to accommodate parishioners who work Wednesday evening or Thursday evening - you may come either night (or both, but the teaching will be the same). Sign-up sheets are in the narthex or call the church office (818-842-7461) and let us know you're coming. All are welcome.

Annual Meeting: February 10, 2013

Sunday, February 10th, we will have a single service at 10 a.m. followed by a potluck lunch and our Annual Meeting. Hope to see you there!
